Open Menu+ Known Issues

Known Bugs

If the quick search feature returns many results (hundreds), it causes the search imagelist to use abnormal amounts of memory and not release it. This is not a memory leak. It is caused because Visual Basic automatically sets each listview it creates to not destroy its associated imagelist when it is destroyed. A fix is being developed and should be released soon.

Fixed Bugs

If there is a duplicate in recent programs, an error occurs in the AddSpecial procedure. To fix this error go into the settings.ini file in the installation directory and delete everything below "[RecentPrograms]". Launch Open Menu+.

Sometimes when Explorer is not running or has crashed since the last time Open Menu+ was opened, two errors will occur. One in procedure tmrOpen_Timer and another in procedure ChangeButton. Open Menu+ will then open a few inches above and to the right of the Start button. If the errors are ignored/aborted and Open Menu+ is opened again, it will be positioned correctly.

The automatic update feature has a big bug. Do not select the option to automatically update. Only select the option to be notified of new updates. This issue will be fixed in the next release.

In Open Menu+ Portable, if the taskbar is on the left or right side of the screen (as opposed to the top or bottom), the menu will not appear.

In Windows Vista, the Favorites section will not work until "Favorites Path" is changed to a completely different directory in Open Menu+ Settings under the Computer section. This does not, however, apply to Open Menu+ Portable.

The easiest way to return to the parent folder in the Programs section is to right click an item and click "Go back to Programs". An "Up One Directory" item has been added to fix this.

nice program!
one thing essential is a button or way to stop the program's searching..when it's searching (say you just write 'a'), you can't stop it and push other prog buttons either.

There is no uninstaller for the portable version. Just delete the Open Menu+ folder, and autorun.inf from your portable drive, then eject and reinsert it. If you want to rename the drive and change the icon, just change "Label" and "Icon" in the autorun.inf file. You can also just delete those lines if you don't want a custom name or icon.

When I try to open openmennu+, I get this message:

Language Not Configured Correctly

Is there a fix for this?

I suggest restarting, and try opening it again. If that doesn't work you should uninstall it and install the newest version (1.5.1 as of 2008-01-11). If you are using XP your favorites will remain intact, but if you are running Vista or the portable version, copy the favorites.txt file from the install directory and restore it after reinstalling.

I've been using the Portable version and I love it! Nice job, thanks for giving it FOSS! I just received an update notice from it (I was running 1.5.3) and did the update to 1.5.4. Now when I click to open the menu I receive two "unexpected error#0" Open_Timer & AddSpecial. Any ideas ??

That happens when the wrong folder is selected in the updater. You should have a folder with only the program and the update.exe now. Delete that folder. Go to the original folder and run update.exe. When the updater begins, be sure to select the correct path to Open Menu+. I'm working on a better updater that won't require you to select the path.

Thanks - I really only have the one \OpenMenu+ on the USB drive, and I'm pretty sure I selected it. After the two error messages the menu does works. I also searched the USB for update.exe and I only see one in the \OpenMenu+ I download 1.5.4 portable and just installed it back to \OpenMenu+ and all seems fine. Thanks for the quick reply and for the program! -Martin

Awesome. I'm glad you got it working. I'm almost complete with the entirely new update system, so hopefully there will only be one more update using the current method, then updates will be much faster and easier.

I just updated to version 1.5.4 of Openmenu+ portable and I am receiving an error whenever I launch the app. It reads

Unexpected error in procedure:AddSpecial
Error#0

Retrying or Ignoring the error has no effect. Aborting at the point of error allows the program to launch.

The same message appears whenever a program is launched through Openmenu+ although it does not actually prevent the program from running. It just pops up along with the program which was executed.

This error is annoying so any help in resolving it would be appreciated.

After much testing, I have found the cause of this error. If Open Menu+ has duplicate entries in the recent programs view, it tries to set both items to have the same key, which causes an error. Try the following to correct this:

Go into the settings.ini file in the installation directory and delete everything below "[RecentPrograms]". Launch Open Menu+.

If that doesn't work, delete the settings.ini file and launch Open Menu+. If you do this, you will have to change your settings back to what they were, but it should solve the error.

Thanks. Deleting the entries under [RecentPrograms] worked. Is this something that will be corrected in a future release?

Actually after more testing, I've determined it doesn't matter if that section gets corrupted, the error is caused by some sloppy code (sorry everybody). I've changed my above comment to the actual cause of the error. I have already fixed this problem and I will be releasing it most likely tomorrow (as version 1.5.5). If you would like to get the updated OpenMenuPlus.exe file immediately you can download it here:

OpenMenuPlus.exe

Or you can check out the source code from SVN (available on SourceForge) and look for OpenMenuPlus.exe in the "Install Runtimes" directory.

Hi!

It's a good tool, but I get an error when I start:

Looked at the demo movie and was really impressed. First (and quite major bug) I noticed is that there's no obvious way to escape out of the start menu.
After I click on the start button, the menu appears. Now lets say I don't find what I'm looking for, or I decide I don't want to start a program, then there's no way, or at least, no obvious way to get the start menu out of the way.
It just stays there.
I would expect a second click on the start button to close the menu. Or a click outside the start menu, such as a blank space on the desktop. Or pressing the ESC key, or "show desktop" link.
All of these methods do work with the default XP start menu and it's good they do.

Hi. I just downloaded this app. It won't start -- it gives me a message that the language isn't correct, or some such thing. How can I get around this?

Thanks.

Hi,

I have just installed it twice in a USB pen, in the Portable applications dolder.
Fisrt using your installer directly, and second time usin it trough the Portable applications.com launcher stuff, and I get always the same error : "Language Not Configured Correctly"

A pity , because the program looks nice at first sight , and i would like to try it!

Thank you!

Angel. A.

For me it runs, but with the same "Language Not Configured Correctly" message as mentioned before. The Configuration dialog looks very wierd, because all checkboxes have completely black labels.
System: WinXP SP2, German

"Language Not Configured Correctly" error for me too. Guess this utility is not yet ready for prime time... I don't even get any sort of configuration dialog at all when I install or run it.

Nothing unusual about my setup, XP SP2 and English.
